The Growlers have gained legions of passionate fans around the globe, amassing 200+ million Spotify streams, 1.5+ million monthly listeners, and 80+ million YouTube streams. The band’s success has been years in the making, fuelled by a non-stop flow of new material and their epic live shows with audiences singing along to every gloriously twisted lyric.
Over the last two months the band have already (not so quietly) released four cuts off the album including the lead single and title track ‘Natural Affair’ as well as ‘Try Hard Fool,’ ‘Foghorn Town’ and the most recent single ‘Pulp of Youth’.
On Natural Affair, The Growlers (led by singer Brooks Nielsen and music director/guitarist Matt Taylor) advance their swampy DIY aesthetic into a sturdier, synthier, dancier sound, bolstered by Nielsen’s finest lyrics to date: social commentary, rhymes, and ruminations on the pleasures (and perils) of modern love. Self-producing the album, they worked with Topanga Canyon friend Kyle Mullarky (Allah-Las, Little Wings) to craft early versions of the songs, then with engineer Ivan Wayman (Father John Misty, The War on Drugs) and mixer Dave Cerminara (HEALTH, Weyes Blood) to bring a new level of polish and continuity.
The Growlers current world tour is now up to a mammoth 81-date run which includes their iconic annual Beach Goth festival (their very own annual happening, now entering its 8th year, with over 11,000 tickets sold to this year’s 3-nighter at LA’s Hollywood Palladium) which in previous years has featured performances from Bon Iver, TLC, Julian Casablancas and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
The band were in Australia earlier in 2019 for their Summer east coast headline tour which included sold-out shows at The Forum and The Metro and were joined onstage by long-time friend, collaborator and honorary Growler, Kirin J Callinan for the full run of dates.
