If you’ve blinked this year, you’ve probably missed it. History has been made over in the UK by artists willing to put in blood, sweat and tears to alter the culture of the music industry. Tottenham MC, Skepta is a prime example of this change as he has reached new levels of success following the release of his studio album Konnichiwa. What makes Konnichiwa so special is the fact that this album was created and released independently with his own label, Boy Better Know. Skepta has received a large number of accolades since the release of this project including the Hyundai 2016 Mercury Prize and reaching gold number of units sold.

This was no overnight success story. Years of hard work and pain has gone into this process. Through Skepta’s achievements, he has managed to open many doors for new artists who are emerging from the creative scene. His humble personality has been exhibited all through the city of London as fans watched his growth.

Skepta’s first album was released 2007 titled ‘Greatest Hits’. This project was well executed, however was not heard by a large scale of people due to the style and approach he took. After years of experimenting with sounds, Skepta finally found his calling in 2014 on the track titled ‘That’s Not Me’. This was the beginning of Skepta’s new journey from which he evolved into a world star.

A year after the release, ‘Shutdown’ surfaced. This track really did Shutdown the internet, as the song spread around the world quickly with the help of social media. This resulted in a spotlight being shined on the MC.

Each move was then calculated and timed perfectly with the assistance of Skepta’s team Boy Better Know. As Skepta’s name grew, it allowed him to work with a variety of artists and producers around the world to help shape his creativity.

While working on this project, there was never a dull moment as the Grime artist toured the world off singles. He left a large impression on Australia after his 2016 January Tour. Skepta was welcomed to our shores with open arms as we exchanged cultures. Shows were performed across the country including Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Savetonight was fortunate enough to capture a few of these memories while at FOMO Festival, Brisbane.

Following the success of their Australian Tour, fans were surprised and amazed when he announced a second tour for 2016. Triple J spread the news around the nation from which tickets sold out immediately. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Skepta was forced to postpone the tour until a later date. There is no doubt that the Tottenham artist will step foot on our land again, hopefully sometime soon.

Meanwhile, Skepta has now announced his biggest headlining show yet. The event will take place in London at Alexandra Palace on the 2nd of December. This show is extremely significant to the culture of Grime as it proves that anything is possible. The venue is over a 125years old and has a capacity of 10,500 people. Due to its size and age, there is no doubt that this show will go down in history. When tickets went on sale, they sold out within 40minutes. These numbers justify greatness only.
